Childhood and pre-childhood are the most serious times for good nutrition.

    1. Maximum health for a child begins with maximum health for a mother well before pregnancy. 

During pregnancy is not a good time to try to quit smoking or to experiment with new supplements.

    2. Extended breast feeding is generally agreed to be a primary factor for long-term health, especially for bones and teeth. 

A breast pump may be used for convenience. We also suspect that raw (unpasteurized) milk can offer similar benefits. However raw milk must be very fresh, and the animals tested for diseases such as tuberculosis. If a child seems allergic to milk, perhaps this can be overcome gradually, starting with one drop. Artificial formulas are not a good solution.

    3. Classical music and fairy tales. 

Research consistently shows that the most important influence on a child's success is how much "quality time" the parents spend. Fairy tales, written centuries ago, are an emotional equivalent of the rainforest. They awaken the most ancient family instincts in both parents and children, which are often neglected in modern childhood. This automatically generates "quality time" on a regular basis. By reading the story, a parent who may be imperfect at expressing emotion also suddenly becomes as wise as the story. It is best to read simply, and not act. The "Rainbow Fairy Books" by Andrew Lang are edited for children.

Similarly, Mozart and most classical music trigger a broad range of brain activity. Modern music expresses far fewer sounds and feelings. Neurons that are not stimulated in childhood tend not to develop. The more sounds, the more feelings, the more neurons. The most important times are probably during pregnancy and infancy.
